As the plastic surface alone is insufficient to trigger the coagulation within an acceptable time, BD Vacutainer plastic serum tubes have silica particles added for this purpose. These tubes are marked with the acronym CAT (Clot Activator Tube).

Sleek and mostly simple assembly and use

I put the parts through the wash to sterilize them before using them. I think this introduced moisture into the grinding unit, which initially affected the grinding so that both the pepper and salt were coming out 'chunky'. I disassembled them and let them thoroughly dry. They are working great now after using them a few times.
